DemoStep is a privacy-first Chrome extension for recording simple screen demos. This Privacy Policy explains how DemoStep handles your information when you use our extension.

Key Promise: Your recordings stay on your device. We don’t collect, store, or transmit your personal data.

DemoStep is designed with privacy by default:

No user accounts - We don’t require registration
No cloud storage - Videos stay on your device
No uploads - Nothing is sent to our servers
No tracking - We don’t track your usage or behavior
No personal data - We don’t collect names, emails, or identifiers

What DemoStep Records Locally

When you use DemoStep, the following data is recorded only on your device:

Screen recording of your active browser tab
Audio from your microphone (if enabled)
Click events and coordinates for demo clarity
Navigation events within the recorded tab
Console errors and warnings (for technical demos)
Browser context (URL, viewport size, timestamp)

All recordings are saved locally as:

demo.webm (video file)
summary.txt (optional demo summary)
events.json (optional technical events)

How We Protect Your Privacy

Local-first architecture - All processing happens on your device
No network requests - Extension works completely offline
Minimal permissions - Only requests necessary Chrome API access
Open source - Code is available for security review
No third-party tracking - No analytics, ads, or external services

Chrome Extension Permissions

DemoStep requests only essential permissions:

activeTab - To record your current browser tab
storage - To save extension settings locally
desktopCapture - To capture screen content
microphone - For optional audio recording

These permissions are used solely for core functionality and never for data collection.

We do not share your data because we don’t have access to it. All recordings remain on your device until you choose to delete or share them manually.

Changes to This Policy

We will notify users of any privacy policy changes through extension updates. Continued use constitutes acceptance of any changes.
